Construction of the Talas community center continues at the corner of Koksikatu and Parrulaituri.
The site foreman Jani Miettinen from the general contractor Arkta Rakennuskultti Oy says that work has largely progressed on schedule, although there have been some delays in the framing work. However, this does not affect the overall schedule. “Otherwise, the work is proceeding according to plan,” he says.
Framework installation is still underway, and in addition to this, the roof decking is currently being installed. Installation of the glass walls will begin in the last week of April.
“The building’s facade features a lot of glass, so it plays a significant role,” noted the project’s construction manager, Riku Lehtiö of A-Insinöörit Oy noted in March.
The building will soon take shape
Miettinen explains that construction will next move on to interior work, with partition walls and flooring being installed inside. This will be followed by building services work, and construction on the terrace surrounding the building will also begin in the spring.
“The building is already starting to take shape; we just need to get the roof in place and install the glass wall,” Miettinen notes.

The design of Talas was carried out by AOR Arkkitehdit Oy, which sought a historical aesthetic suitable for the maritime environment. In addition to glass surfaces, the building’s exterior emphasizes wooden structures. The name “Talas,” derived from the winning wooden design, refers to a boat shed.
Serving a Diverse User Group
Talas is the first shared clubhouse building for service companies in the Kalasatama area. Its user group consists of the shareholder communities of the area’s service companies. Upon completion, the interior will feature a multipurpose space, a café, and a sauna. The building is intended to provide versatile and comfortable facilities for the area’s residents.
Construction will continue through 2025. The cornerstone-laying ceremony was held at the end of January.
The building is currently seeking a long-term restaurant or café operator.
