Construction work on the community center began at the turn of the year and will continue throughout 2025.
The site at the corner of Koksikatu and Parrulaituri has been bustling with activity since the beginning of 2025. The building’s foundation stone-laying ceremony took place on January 28. The event celebrated the completion of the first shared community space for service companies in the Kalasatama area.
The shared community space project has progressed smoothly, even though the small lot poses some logistical challenges for construction.
“The project has gone according to plan, and we’ve overcome a few challenges through good cooperation and worked hard to stay on schedule,” explains Riku Lehtiö, the project manager from A-Insinöörit.
Structural framing work was carried out in March
Following the structural framing, construction will continue with the erection of the first walls and the installation of the roof. Another major phase of the work is the installation of the facade glazing. “The building’s facade has a lot of glass, so it plays a significant role,” Lehtiö explains. After this, construction will move on to interior work.
Lehtiö emphasizes that the project has been carried out through excellent collaboration among the various parties involved. The building’s clients are Kalasataman Palveluyhtiöt Oy and Kalasataman Palvelu Oy 2, and the general contractor for the project is Arkta Rakennuskultti Oy.
“We have a very good team carrying out the work, and I believe the project will continue on a positive note,” Lehtiö sums up.
Common areas for Kalasatama residents
The building rising by the sea reflects the history of its location, as indicated by the name “Talas,” which refers to a boat shed. AOR Arkkitehdit Oy won the architectural competition held for the site in 2022 with its “Talas” proposal. The proposal stood out, among other things, due to its versatile uses and its sense of history.
The building will house, among other things, a multipurpose space, a café, and a sauna with ocean-view terraces. The building is intended for use by the member companies of the area’s service cooperatives and their residents. Its design takes into account user groups of all ages, from children to the elderly. Currently, the community center a café operator is being sought.
