A new work is being added to Kalasatama’s public art collection.
Kalasatama’s A Stream Among Streams art collection, curated by HAM Helsinki Art Museum, will be expanded in November 2025 with a new sound art piece. The work was created by artist Flis Holland in collaboration with composer Juuli Haverinen and 16 voice actors.
The unveiling event for the work titled 25/7will be held on Tuesday, November 4, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Participants will gather at the M8S Studio Hub at Arielinkatu 16, from where they will proceed to Kalasatamanpuisto.
Take listeners into a parallel reality
Holland’s work references Kalasatama as a testing ground for smart city innovations, as stated in HAM’s press release. The audio work depicts a sci-fi-like experiment in which residents of Kalasatama have an implant designed to add an extra hour to the day. However, the implant does not work as intended.
The inspiration comes from the Smart Kalasatama project, in which smart technology solutions are promised to give Kalasatama residents an extra hour in their day. In this work, the artist takes this promise literally, as visitors to the area experience a 25-hour daily cycle.
Juuli Haverinen is responsible for the work’s sound design, which is based on recordings made in Kalasatamanpuisto. Among other things, the work features excerpts from phone conversations between Kalasatama residents and people living elsewhere, colored by the challenges posed by the time difference.
The sound piece raises questions about who has access to the valuable resource of an extra hour and what happens when this reality collides with other realities. It also explores the experience of people with neurological conditions or chronic illnesses who live at a rhythm that is inherently different from that of the rest of the population.

Hollad’s work is the latest addition to the A Stream Among Streams art project. The works use art and research to explore technological or virtual applications as part of urban planning. The first work is Laura Beloff’s R-Bus from 2023, and the remaining two will be installed in the area over the coming years.
In the fall of 2025, a permanent installation created by the Keiken artist collective was also placed in Kalasatama Park Ángel Yōkai Atā , which was originally shown at the 2023 Helsinki Biennial.
The public artworks in the area are based on the City of Helsinki’s “one percent for art” principle, which is also being followed in the construction of the Kalasatama area. As part of the Kalasatama environmental art project, various forms of art—both permanent and temporary—as well as events are being organized in the area.
Funding for the environmental art project comes from a per-square-meter fee collected from developers in the area. The public artworks to be added to the Helsinki Art Collection are curated by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
