Kalasataman Palvelu Oy is participating in the “Fiksu Kalasatama” project’s “Rapid Trials” program by bringing smart technology to waste management and providing a feedback mechanism to support the management of smart trash cans, vacuum waste collection systems, and shared courtyard furniture.
The bins at the five waste collection points installed by the service company are equipped with smart sensor technology that monitors fill levels, emptying, and operational issues. The data is collected wirelessly into a backend application that monitors events, controls emptying schedules, and gathers information on waste streams.
In addition, smart trash cans, vacuum waste system feed points, and common-area furnishings—such as lighting fixtures, outdoor furniture, playground equipment, and yard trash cans — will be equipped with QR/NFC tags, which residents can use with their smartphones to report malfunctions and provide feedback on individual pieces of street furniture. Depending on the item, reports will be forwarded to the maintenance company, the vacuum waste collection company, or another relevant operator.
The pilot for smart trash cans began in early February, and the pilot for the feedback mechanism will begin in early March. In the initial phase, the feedback mechanism will be implemented in the shared courtyards of the Stuuvari, Stevari, and Junkki blocks, and information about the launch will be posted on the notice boards in the shared courtyards. As the pilot progresses and based on the experiences gained, the area and the locations to be monitored may be expanded or reduced.
