The fourth of the Kalasatama high-rises was completed in late 2023. High-rise construction is on the rise in Finland.
The Visio high-rise, completed in December 2023, is the fourth of the high-rises being built in the Kalasatama area. Majakka, Loisto, and Lumo One already stand near REDI. Majakka, the first of the high-rises, was completed in 2019.
According to SRV, the developer of the high-rises, construction has proceeded according to plan and with as little disruption as possible to the REDI shopping center as well as to residents and passersby in the area.
Kalasatama offers an excellent setting for modern living
Kai Remmler, Unit Manager for High-Rise Projects at SRV explains that Kalasatama has become one of Helsinki’s most sought-after residential areas. “Kalasatama combines proximity to nature, a wide range of services, efficient transportation links, and a good housing supply into an attractive whole,” he notes.
The metro provides quick access in various directions, both within Helsinki and toward Espoo. The new tram line from Kalasatama to Pasila will be completed in 2024. Services are also exceptionally close to the residents of the Kalasatama high-rises, and the REDI shopping center is practically on the ground floor of the towers.
“According to a survey we conducted among high-rise residents, diverse services and well-functioning common areas are a valuable addition to living here,” Remmler notes.
Construction of the Kalasatama high-rises continues, and the Horisontti office building will be completed in 2025 as Finland’s first office skyscraper, rising 111 meters above sea level. A separate construction decision will be made for each high-rise building, and these will be announced individually, according to SRV.
Construction of the high-rise buildings is proceeding as planned
High-rise construction has become more common in Finland in recent years, and in addition to Kalasatama, towers have been built in Eastern Helsinki in areas such as Vuosaari, Kontula, and Herttoniemi. Demand for high-rise construction is on the rise, primarily for practical reasons.
“According to our survey of high-rise residents, diverse services and well-functioning common areas are a valuable addition to housing.”

“High-rise construction is sustainable urban development, when land is used efficiently in a dense urban environment by building upward and close to good public transportation connections,” Remmler notes.
Living in high-rises takes both housing and leisure activities in a more modern direction overall. “High-rise construction creates opportunities for service packages unprecedented in Finland, which free people’s time from daily routines so they can do what they enjoy,” Remmler says.
