The proposed zoning amendment will allow for the construction of a communal celebration and recreational space for Kalasatama residents, covering approximately 1,200 square meters. The City of Helsinki has set aside a lot on the edge of Kalasatamanpuisto Park for the project. A three-story harbor building previously stood on the site. The dilapidated building was demolished in 2018. The proposed zoning plan will be reviewed by the committee in the spring of 2021.
The planned community center is being developed jointly by Kalasataman Palvelu Oy, the service company for the Sörnäistenniemi area, and Kalasataman Palvelu 2 Oy, the service company for Sompasaari and Verkkosaari. In the project plan currently being developed for the community center, the facilities will include, among other things, various event spaces, multipurpose rooms for sports and hobbies, a reservation-based sauna for residents’ use, and restaurant facilities. The estimated cost of the entire construction project is approximately 3–4 million euros.
