Commercial services—from grocery stores to cultural offerings—are available not only at the REDI shopping center but also at street level throughout the Kalasatama area.
Cultural offerings are available to both residents and visitors year-round. Several permanent and temporary public art installations have been erected in Kalasatama, and various events are held regularly in areas such as Suvilahti and Teurastamo. In addition, the Korkeasaari Zoo is located right next to Kalasatama.
Schoolchildren can spend their entire elementary school years at the same Kalasatama school, and the number of schools and daycare centers will be expanded even further in the near future. Kalasatama Service Companies
There are two service companies operating in the Kalasatama area that develop, own, manage, and maintain shared courtyards, common club rooms, and ground-level parking lots.
Commercial Services
The Kalasatama area is home to grocery stores, specialty shops, restaurants, beauty services, entertainment, and much more—for both everyday life and special occasions. The most famous and comprehensive of the area’s commercial services is the REDI Shopping Center, known for its style inspired by European street culture.
For example, visitors can indulge in Italian cuisine, enjoy a wide selection of beers, or explore various pop-up shops.
In addition, new shops, restaurants, and other commercial establishments are constantly emerging, particularly on the street levels of residential buildings throughout the Kalasatama area. The shops, restaurants, and services in the Tukkutori area are also nearby.
Kalasatama Health and Wellness Center
Health center services, social services, oral health care services, and psychiatric and substance abuse services are all provided under one roof in Kalasatama. Help for various health and life challenges is readily available.
In addition, the Kalasatama Health and Wellness Center offers, among other things, physical and occupational therapy services, senior services, immigration services, services for people with disabilities, family planning counseling, and laboratory services.
Daycare Centers and Schools in Kalasatama
As Kalasatama grows, public services—such as the educational offerings of schools and daycare centers—are also expanding. Since fall 2016, children in the area have been able to follow a unified school path, and Kalasatama Elementary School now serves grades 1–9.
With younger children in mind, the number of daycare centers in the area is increasing so that, in the future, everyone who wants one will have access to higher-quality and more convenient daycare. New daycare centers are opening in Sompasaari and Verkkosaari, and after-school club activities are also organized in connection with the daycare centers.
Sports and Recreation Services
Kalasatama offers countless opportunities for hobbies and physical activity. Among the most important is the Mustikkamaa outdoor recreation area, which features jogging trails, a swimming beach, sports fields, and a dog park. The area also features a new outdoor fitness center, which is available to both residents and passersby. Access to Mustikkamaa is made easier by the Isoisänsilta pedestrian and bike bridge, which leads from Sörnäistenniemi and is heavily used by pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition, the sports field in Kalasatamanpuisto is frozen over in the winter when weather permits, and the school gym hosts exercise sessions organized by local clubs. Once the area is completed, a six-kilometer-long, varied waterfront trail will circle the Kalasatama shores.
