Kalasataman Palvelu Oy is installing more street-side trash cans

In January 2016, at the residents’ request, Kalasataman Palvelu Oy installed five street-side trash bin assemblies in the shared courtyards it manages; these are used to collect trash, dog waste, and cigarette butts. A complaint was filed regarding the placement of one of the waste collection points; the complaint was forwarded through the building control authority to the Environmentaland Licensing Subcommittee of the City Environment Committee, which decided to compel the service company, under threat of a penalty fine, to relocate the waste bin assembly that was the subject of the complaint. The service company appealed the decision to the Helsinki AdministrativeCourt, which overturned the decision and stated, among other things, that “…the waste bins meet reasonable requirements in terms of health, safety, and appearance. They can also be considered to blend well into the densely built-up urban environment and do not cause any hindrance to traffic.”

Once the AdministrativeCourt’s decision became final, the service company can continue to develop waste management in the area—as previously planned—through the shared courtyards it manages, and has decided to install, in addition to the five existing waste bin combinations, three new identical combinations at the locations shown in the image in the shared courtyards.

The new waste bin combinations are of the same high quality as the previous ones and, like them, include separate compartments for trash, dog waste, and cigarette butts. The service company is also responsible for emptying and maintaining these new trash cans. The new trash cans will be put into use at the end of March, weather permitting.
