The Merihaansilta Bridge will open to pedestrians and cyclists—the opening ceremony will be held on June 17

The completion of the first phase of the Kruunusillat project will be celebrated on June 17, 2025. Construction of the Kruunusillat bridges began in the fall of 2021. 

The first phase of the Kruunusillat project will open to pedestrians and cyclists on June 17, 2025. The new connection runs from Merihaka in Hakaniemi to Nihti in Kalasatama. The City of Helsinki invites all residents to celebrate The bridge opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, June 17, during Midsummer weekat 5:00 p.m. The dress code for the event is traditional national costume or other clothing suitable for outdoor activities. 

The Kruunusillat connection is scheduled to be fully completed in 2027. Upon completion, it will consist of three bridges: the Merihaansilta, the Finkensilta connecting Kalasatama and Korkeasaari, and the Kruunuvuorensilta between Korkeasaari and Laajasalo. 

 

Speeds up travel between Kalasatama and Hakaniemi

The opening of the Merihaansilta Bridge to pedestrians and cyclists is long awaited by locals. The new connection will shorten the journey from Kalasatama to Hakaniemi by 1.5 kilometers. Until now, traveling between these areas by road has only been possible via Sörnäinen and Kalasatama. With the new bridge, the distance is just over 400 meters.

The Kruunuvuori Bridge, which connects to Laajasalo, will open to pedestrians and cyclists in the spring of 2026, and tram service will begin in 2027. The Finkensilta pedestrian crossing, meanwhile, will open in August 2025 for visitors to Korkeasaari. Access without a Korkeasaari ticket will be possible starting in late fall of that same year. Starting in late 2026, cyclists will also be able to use the connection.

 

Merihaansilta

  • 422 meters long
  • A tram track runs down the center of the bridge, with sidewalks located on the north and south sides of the bridge, and a bike path is also located on the south side
  • The bridge’s clearance height is 2.6 m (MW) 2.8 m (N2000)
  • The bridge has a movable section that can only be used in special cases
