More than 1,300 new residents moved to Kalasatama in 2025, according to the City of Helsinki.
In 2025, the rapidly expanding Kalasatama area grew even further. The City of Helsinki reported at the end of the year that more than 1,300 residents moved to the area in 2025. Approximately 730 new homes were completed in Verkkosaari and Nihti. The new homes included rental, owner-occupied, and right-of-occupancy units. An estimated 1,000 jobs were created in the area.
New services for the growing area
Horisontti, Finland’s tallest office building, which rises to a height of 111 meters, was completed in the spring of 2025. The French-inspired BISOUBISOU brasserie & bar opened at the top of Horisontti on the eve of May Day 2025. In Kalasatama , eight high-rise buildings will be constructed by 2027of which Majakka, Loisto, Lumo One, and Horisontti have already been completed.
More evening-focused restaurants have opened in the area in recent years. For example, HuuHaa Astro Bar & Bistro is now a hit at Teurastamo, and Treff’s Verkkosaari location serves customers in Capellanranta. Red’s restaurant selection expanded in 2023 with the addition of another dining destination, Food Port.
There has been a call for dedicated spaces for young people, and A youth center for Hermanninranta and Kalasatama is being built in the area, with construction scheduled to begin in 2026, as things stand. The facility will provide young people with better opportunities for leisure activities and hobbies.
Local residents can contribute to the area’s development through the City of Helsinki’s participatory budgeting program, in which residents can propose new projects and vote on them. For example, the following project is currently underway in the area: a winter swimming spot.
Improved Transportation Links
Transportation links between downtown Helsinki and eastern Helsinki are set to undergo a major transformation with the Kruunusillat project. The first section of the bridges, the Merihaansilta, opened in June 2025, and the second section, from Nihdi to Korkeasaari, opened to pedestrians in August.
In August 2024, tram line 13 from Nihdi to Pasila was inaugurated. After one year of operation, in August 2025 HSL reportedthat the line has been actively used and has been well-received by passengers. The line runs directly from Kalasatama through Hermannin, the southern parts of Arabianranta, and Kumpula to Pasila Station. In the spring of 2027 the Kalasatama metro station will be closed for the duration of bridge repairs.
