A new tram line between Kalasatama and Pasila has begun operating

The new tram line between Kalasatama and Pasila began operating in August 2024.

The new tram line serving the Kalasatama area was completed on schedule and began operating on August 12, 2024. The tram line was implemented as part of the Kalasatama–Pasila project, which is backed by the Sörkän spora and Karaatti alliances and their clients, the City of Helsinki and Kaupunkiliikenne Oy (formerly HKL).

Construction of the line has been underway since 2022, and it will bring entirely new areas into the rail transit network.

“The tram line between Kalasatama and Pasila supports urban development in Helsinki and the surrounding region, as it provides fast connections between the capital’s fastest-growing areas,” says Anni Sinnemäki, Deputy Mayor for the City Environment Division, notes in a City of Helsinki news release.

Supports green goals and a zero-emission Helsinki

The project serves as a pilot platform for improving sustainability, and has been guided by ambitious environmental and sustainability goals. The construction phase was also planned to cause as little disruption as possible to the surrounding areas.

Both the City of Helsinki and HSL are actively working toward strict emission reduction targets.

“Expanding rail service and increasing the number of electric buses are among the measures that will help us achieve our transportation emissions targets. By providing fast rail connections with plenty of services along the route, we’ll also reduce the need for private car use,” says Sinnemäki.

Makes it easier to get around the area

The new line runs from Nihdi through the Kalasatama Metro station, Hermannin rantatie, and Vallilanlaakso to Pasila. The line serves the growing Kalasatama area as well as other travelers in Helsinki. It will also support passengers traveling via the Kruunusillat bridges, which are scheduled to be completed in 2027 between Laajasalo and Hakaniemi.

The terminal stops for Line 13 are Nihti at the southern tip of Sompasaari and Maistraatintori in Länsi-Pasila. On weekdays, the tram runs every ten minutes during rush hour and throughout the day. Detailed schedules and additional information about the line are available at HSL’s route guide and on the website.
